Kid Colt Outlaw Primer
Series Overview
With the transition from Timely to Atlas Comics, Kid Colt Outlaw continued on while other titles were cut, the character is a testament of the longevity of the western genre. However, or the most part, the series wasn’t exactly shaking things up. There’s not really much that was done that shook up the character until near the end of the Atlas run. Even then, it was just the addition of a regular artist. Jack Keller came on board as artist with Kid Colt Outlaw #25 and kept on drawing the book until issue #132.
The series primarily featured Kid Colt with a few one-off western stories. Issue #20 did feature a backup story featuring the Apache Kid. Issue #33 brought the Black Rider as a regular backup feature in the title until issue #45. Kid Colt Outlaw then resumed using on-off western stories and eventually adopted text stories right before the Marvel age.
The Comic Book Authority Code kicked in by issue #46. Due to the censorship imposed on comic books by the Code, it was around this issue that Kid Colt stopped killing his opponents, something that would remain in effect until the code became more lax in later years and later abandoned by Marvel Comics all together.
