Thor #161

Shall a God Prevail?

Credits

Caught between a battle between Galactus and Ego the Living Planet, Thor and the Recorder’s ship is destroyed leaving the pair trapped in the void of space. Luckily, the Wanderers — the first victims of Galactus — find them and bring them aboard their ship where they are given immediate medical attention.

Meanwhile, the battle between Ego and Galactus rages on. Ego tries to blast the Visi-Sphere that Galactus is piloting, but the ship withstands the attack. Using his ship’s weapons, Galactus then rains down a number of meteors on Ego’s surface. Ego responds by growing tentacles to snare his ship.

By this time, Thor and the Recorder have woken up aboard the Wanderer’s ship. Introducing himself to their leader, Thor discovers that the Wanderers know all about him and more, they welcome his aid in the battle against Galactus. However, the meeting is interrupted when their ship is struck by a number of meteors from the battle. Thor decides that enough is enough and, after ordering the Recorder to stay behind, leaps in between the two cosmic combatants. Tossing Mjolnir, Thor manages to stagger Galactus with a blow from his weapon. When he tries to attack Galactus directly, the world devourer erects a barrier to protect himself. Grabbing the thunder god, Galactus then throws him toward Ego’s surface.

By this time, the Wanderers have landed on Ego’s surface and use a tractor beam to break Thor’s fall. Cannibalizing material from the Wanderer’s ship, Thor build a device that will focus the energies of Mjolnir and fires a powerful beam of energy at Galactus. So painful is this attack, Galactus retreats into his visi-sphere and flees into space. With the battle over, the Wanderers wonder where they can go next. Suddenly, Ego’s lifeless surface transforms into a lush forest. Appearing before Thor and the others, Ego tells the Wanderers that they are welcome to live on his surface as thanks for saving him from Galactus.[1]
