Doctor Octopus is in a private meeting with his doctor who tells him that after all the years of brain injuries, Doctor Octopus has suffered serious brain damage. Thanks to the radiation he was exposed to during the accident that first bonded his mechanical arms to his body have complicated things, making his condition degenerative and he is suspected of having less than a year to live. Doctor Octopus refuses to allow his genius to go to waste, vowing that once he is finally dead and gone nobody will forget the name of Doctor Octopus.[1]

Spider-Man and Daredevil have just crashed the Bar With No Name, an illegal bar where super-villains hang out. The villains who try to flee are quickly picked up by the police, led by Detective Yuri Watanabe, who arrests them all. After retreating to the rooftop, Spider-Man decides he should reveal his secret identity to Daredevil again.[2] However, Daredevil stops him, not knowing how Spider-Man managed to make it so even his heightened senses can figure out who he really is, he should keep his identity a secret whenever possible. [3]To punctuate this, he tells Spider-Man that four women in his life have suffered due to their knowledge he was secretly Daredevil. [4] This bums out Spider-Man, but he quickly changes his attitude by reminding himself that he is on the clock. Peter Parker rushed back to the offices of the Front Line to turn in his photos of the bust at the Bar With No Name. While Ben Urich is grateful for Peter’s photos, he reminds Parker that he is supposed to be at the rehersal for his Aunt May’s wedding . Peter assures Ben that he’ll make it on time, but he needed the money. Unfortunately, Peter is out of web-fluid and is forced to take the subway making him totally late. Peter arrives moments after the rehersal is over. While May and Jay are understanding, the elder Jameson is disappointed that his own son, mayor J. Jonah Jameson didn’t show. Once everyone else is gone, May asks Peter if she can depend on him to walk her down the isle. Peter assures her that nothing will stop him from having that honor.
As he tells her this, he is unaware of some of octo-drones of Doctor Octopus that are busy rewiring a nearby traffic light. The same thing is happening all over the city allowing Doctor Octopus to start taking control of every device in the entire city. He presses the octo-bots to work faster and faster, as his time is fleeting. Putting on a helmet that will allow him to interface with is computers and scan all the data. Coming across the news of Spider-Man’s recent activities angers Octavius who now considers the wall-crawler beneath them. He then comes across the wedding announcement for May Parker and Jay Jameson. This causes him to pause as he still has feelings for May and remembers how once they almost got married.[5]
Back in Forest Hills, Anna Watson, May, and Jay are all speculating who Peter will be bringing to the wedding as a guest when suddenly the get call after call being told that their various wedding preparations have been cancelled. The last straw is when they get a call telling them that there is no record of their marriage certificate. As Peter assures May that everything will get straightened out, Jay agrees and leaves to sort things out. Later, at Bryant Park, Jay interrupts Jonah’s officiating a bikini fashion show to accuse him of trying to interfere with his wedding. As the gathered reporters trip over themselves to record this spectacle, Jay warns his son that if he doesn’t fix things he’ll pull him across his knees and spank him. After which, Jay returns to his penthouse apartment and begin practicing his golf swing in order to calm down. That’s when he is suddenly swarmed by an army of octo-bots. Meanwhile, May is visiting the grave of her late husband, Ben Parker, as she feels like fate is trying to prevent her from getting married again.[6] She then asks Ben to give her a sign that she is making the right decision. At that moment, Peter has called his friend Carlie Cooper and is about to ask her to be his plus one to the wedding he gets a call from his aunt. She tells him that she is worried about Jay because he is not answering his phone and Peter agrees to go out and check on him. He switches back to Carlie as he changes into his Spider-Man he asks Carlie to meet up with him when he goes to check on Jay.
As Spider-Man enters the isle of Manhattan his spider-sense begins giving a low tingle. Suddenly, city fixtures such as traffic lights and lamp posts begin exploding or electrifying as he tries to swing off them. Landing on the street, the wall-crawler has to dodge cars that suddenly take on minds of their own and try to run him over, turning the street into a sudden demolition derby. Spider-Man wonders if this is some kind of revenge after the bust at the Bar With No Name and decides to investigate what’s going on with Jay until after he learns the cause of these disturbances. At this time, Carlie Cooper is arriving at Jay Jameson’s apartment and catches Norah Winters trying to jimmy the lock. Norah quickly explains that she came to get further comment from Jay after his public argument with his son, the mayor, and was told by the neighbors that there were sounds of a struggle coming from inside Jay’s apartment Cooper decides to let Norah continue to force the lock because Jameson might be in trouble. Inside, they discover the apartment in shambles. After a quick sweep Cooper finds a golf club with the shattered remains of an octo-bot stuck on it. By this point, Doctor Octopus has taken full control of the entire city and decides that it is time to let the world know. With a simulated image of his old face — in order to hide his now decrepid form — Doctor Octopus addresses the people of New York and tells them that his final gift to the world is to take full control of the city of New York and make it into the world’s first completely automated city. This message is beamed to every screen in the city. Seeing this message is J. Jonah Jameson who instantly panics but refrains from calling the Governor and calling in the National Guard, asking his assistant what their current budget is.
Spider-Man also sees this message as he swings past a bank of television screens in a shop window. As he passes by, the television screens explode and he barley manages to avoid the flying debris. Seeing other parts of the city infastructure starting to explode, Spider-Man realizes that while Doctor Octopus intends to help the city he is subconciously making things worse. After saving a window washer, people on the street realize that Doctor Octopus is trying to attack the wall-crawler and flee from him in fear. That’s when the New Avengers arrive on the scene and tell Spider-Man to let them handle it since his presence appears to be making the city become more and more voletile.[7] That’s when Spider-Man gets a call from Carlie Cooper who tells Peter that she can’t meet with him as she and Norah Winters are on the trail of Doctor Octopus after Carlie rewired her spider-tracer tarcker to track the source of the octo-bot’s signals.[8] Just as Peter warns her that it is too dangerous, both she and Norah are captured. Needing to find Carlie and Norah as quickly as possible, Spider-Man rushes to the Baxter Building where Mister Fantastic is fitting the Thing with a device that will allow them to transmitt a conflicting brain pattern to try and intercept Doctor Octopus’ signal. Spider-Man tells them that he needs them to trace the location of Carlie’s cell phone. The Human Torch agrees to help after hearing that women are in trouble. At that same moment, Carlie and Norah are brought before Doctor Octopus and are shocked to see his emeciated body. He tells them that this is the first step in his plan to take over the entire world.
A short time later, Spider-Man and the Human Torch have arrived outside the abandoned US Atomics facility, the place where Doctor Octopus was born. Once they force their way inside they are attacked by octopus harnesses that are holding Jay Jameson, Carlie, and Norah prisoner. This slows down the heroes only until the wall-crawler discovers a way to destroy the power sources without harming the prisoners. With the prisoners free, Spider-Man tells Johnny to get them to safety while he deals with Doctor Octopus. Watching this over the security monitors, Octavius is furous when he hears Spider-Man openly mocking him. When the wall-crawler enters the control room he attacks what he thinks is Doctor Octopus, but turns out to be a mass of octo-bots. When Doctor Octopus ambushes Spider-Man, and has the advantage at first due to his extra mechanical arms, he is quickly pinned under some machinery because he is not as mobile as he used to be. Coming across the control helmet that Octavius has been using to mentally control the city, Spider-Man puts it on and remembering what Reed Richards had said about a stronger mental impuls being able to override Otto’s control matches his brain against his long time foe.[9] Not only does Spider-Man manage to overpower Otto’s power over the city and shut down the chaos, he also uses his full access to every database in the city in order to reinstate his Aunt May’s wedding. After May gets calls that everything is back on, she calls Jay to tell him the good news. Thinking this is a sign from Ben, she looks at a photo of her late husband and thanks hm. Although he is defeated, Doctor Octopus manages to escape by swarming Spider-Man with his octo-bots and flees into an escape tunnel. That’s when the Human Torch arrives to blast the drones off of Spider-Man with is flames. As he escapes, Octavius vows that he will get his revenge by doing something great, and terrible.[10]
In the aftermath of the battle, Spider-Man worries that his identity may have been left all over databases across the city, but Mister Fantastic assures Peter that he is scrubbing all traces of Spider-Man and tells him to be proud because he saved the city.[11] Realizing that he has a wedding to attend, Spider-Man departs with the Human Torch in tow. Johnny tells Spider-Man that he is attending the wedding as well after Carlie Cooper asked him to be her plus one. Back at his apartment, Peter is fussing with is suit when he roommate, Michele Gonzales, notices his face is totally bruised up and covers them up with her makeup. Learning that he doesn’t have a date for the wedding she goes to her room to find a dress, telling Peter that he owes her. At the wedding, J. Jonah Jameson has used the opportunity to spin things in his favor, telling the gathered press that not only is he officiating the wedding himself, he is also paying for everything. Inside, everyone is surprised that Peter managed to arrive on time and with a date. After introducing everyone to Michele, Peter goes to check on Aunt May who is still getting ready. She is pleased to see Peter and takes the moment to tell him that while she spent her life doting over him for fear of something terrible happening, she also points out that even happy moments can occur in an instant and tells him to cherish them while they last. As J. Jonah Jameson begins officiating the ceremony, Betty Brant notices that Harry Osborn is absent. Her date, Flash Thompson, tells her that he is dealing with something right now. At that same moment, another guest hops into a cab but is running late for the wedding. Soon, May and Jay are reciting their vows and they are pronounced husband and wife. As they kiss, Peter takes a moment to make a joke about borrowing money from J. Jonah Jameson now that they are family. Soon, May is about to toss her bouqette into the crowd, something that all the young female attendees rush to partificapte in . As May tosses the bouquette, the late comer arrives just in time to grab the flowers. Everyone turns to see who it is an they are shocked to see that it is Peter’s ex-girllfriend Mary Jane Watson.

There is, of course, his origin and first battle with Spider-Man that happened in Amazing Spider-Man #3.
Captain America punched Doctor Octopus in the face in Captain America #159.
Doc Ock getting hit across the head with Daredevil’s Billy Club was in Daredevil #165 (he also kicked Doc in the head in the same issue but who’s keeping count?)
The depiction of Hammerhead striking Doctor Octopus headfirst is not entirely accurate. This was depicted on the cover of Amazing Spider-Man #159. He never actually headbutts Doc Ock in the story although he does smash him onto the ground head first. I guess we can chalk this mistake up to the fact that Doc is brain-damaged.
The time that the Hulk knocked out Doctor Octopus with a flick of the finger happened in Incredible Hulk #396.
Doc Ock’s took an energy blast to the face from Ultron in Marvel Super Heroes Secret Wars #2
Lastly, there’s the blow to the head that Ock received from the Sandman. That happened in Amazing Spider-Man #338. Although the depiction of Doc Ock here shows him wearing his green and orange costume, while in the story in question Doc is wearing a green suit.
2. Peter Parker has known that Matt Murdock is secretly Daredevil since Peter Parker, the Spectacular Spider-Man #107-110. Murdock also discovered Peter’s identity in that same time, but his memory of was erased when Mephisto altered reality in Amazing Spider-Man #545.
3. Why Daredevil’s heightened senses prevent him from learning Spider-Man’s secret identity is because the spell that was cast by Doctor Strange to erase everyone’s memory also makes it so that nobody but Peter Parker can reveal his identity to others. Anyone who tries has their attempts clouded by the spell. Details on how this spell works are explained in Amazing Spider-Man #591, 641, and 673.
4. Daredevil has lost a lot of lovers due to their knowledge of Daredevil’s double identity. There are a lot fridged women in Daredevil’s life. These “lucky” ladies are:
Heather Glenn learned Daredevil’s secret identity in Daredevil #149. After struggling with depression and alcoholism she committed suicide in Daredevil #220.
There’s also Glorianna O’Breen whom Murdock first met in Daredevil #205. Technically she never knew Daredevil’s secret identity but she was killed by a Daredevil villain named Kruell, so I guess that technically counts?
Then there’s Karen Page who first learned Daredevil’s secret identity in Daredevil #57. She was later murdered by Mysterio in Daredevil (vol. 2) #5.
The only woman lucky enough not to get fridged is Milia Donovan, who learned his identity in Daredevil (vol. 2) #41. However, she was driven insane and was later institutionalized in Daredevil (vol. 2) #105, hardly a consolation prize.
5. Doctor Octopus first met May Parker way back in Amazing Spider-Man Annual #1 when he kidnapped her as part of a plot to lure Spider-Man into a battle with his Sinister Six. At the time, May was unaware that Octavius was a super criminal and at one point he romanced her to the point where the two almost got married in Amazing Spider-Man #131, but this was foiled by Spider-Man. While Octavius is sentimental over May here, back then Otto was only marrying May in order to get access to a Canadian nuclear power facility that she had recently inherited (crazy but it’s true)
6. Ben Parker, as we should all know by now, was murdered in an armed robbery back in Amazing Fantasy #15.
7. Spider-Man quibbles over who has the right to call themselves the real Avengers. He is referring to how Norman Osborn has formed his own team of Avengers that are considered the “official” team in the eyes of the government. This group was formed in Dark Avengers #1.
8. This is the same tracker that Carlie Cooper used to find out who was responsble for the spider-tracer killings in Amazing Spider-Man #584-588.
9. Spider-Man interfacing with Otto’s device will come back to bite him in the ass as we’ll see in Amazing Spider-Man #698-700.
10. Otto’s next scheme is detailed in During the Ends of the Earth story arc which takes place during Amazing Spider-Man #682-687, Amazing Spider-Man: Ends of the Earth #1, and Avenging Spider-Man #8.
11. Spider-Man mentions how he recently revealed his secret identity to both the Fantastic Four and the New Avengers. Peter revealed his identity to the FF in Amazing Spider-Man #590-591 and the New Avengers in New Avengers #51.
Identity Crisis[1]
After giving a lecture to a class, psychotrist Gray Madder returns to his private pracitce where his TV watching is interrupted by the arrival of Spider-Man who asks for his help. The psychiatrist realizes that treating Spider-Man could mean a huge boost to his career. Inviting the wall-crawler in, Spider-Man tells Madder that he is suffering an identity crisis. He tells Gray that he doesn’t feel like he is in control of his life. To explain what he means, he points out that over the years, despite growing older, Madder is basically the same guy, while Spider-Man is not. He starts by asking Madder how many arms he has. At first, Spider-Man only has two when suddenly he mow has six, telling him that this was his situation a few years ago.[2] Spider-Man quickly returns to having two arms but then as he is telling Gray that he was getting used to his red and blue costume he suddenly had an all black costume, suddenly Spider-Man is wearing his black-and-white costume[3] Suddenly, Spider-Man turns into the Spider-Hulk, which makes Madder think someone is playing a prank on him. Spider-Man insists that this is all real and tosses the shirnk onto his own couch.[4] Gray Madder suddenly finds his sanity reeling as Spider-Man suddenly shrinks down to microscopic size,[5] becomes a Spider-Lizard,[6] a massive spider,[7] and then the Spider-Ham.[8]
Spider-Man then says that it’s not just his appearance is constantly changing. To demonstrate that he has villains who he once thought were dead turn up alive again, he shows Madder two different issues of the Daily Bugle saying that the Green Goblin is dead and alive.[9] Then there is his Aunt May who is always in frail health and about to die except for the time she did die — but not really.[10] Lastly, he talks about his relationship with Mary Jane Watson. One minute they’re dating, the next they’re not. Then they’re married, then they’re not. At one point Mary Jane was even pregnant until she wasn’t.[11]
By this point, Madder has head enough and suddenly runs out of his own office. Soon, Gray is relating this enitre situation to his own psychiatrist.
Continuity Notes
This story is non-canonical, but it does have a lot of references to Spider-Man continuity and that’s the only reason why I’m bothering to write a summary.
Spider-Man briefly had six arms between Amazing Spider-Man #100 to 102. Per the Sliding Timescale, this would have happened roughly 9 years prior to this story.
Spider-Man went through a costume change when he started wearing an alien symbiote as a costume starting in Marvel Super Heroes Secret Wars #8. Although he ditched the symbiote in Amazing Spider-Man #257 he began wearing a cloth version of that costume on occasion starting in Peter Parker, the Spectacular Spider-Man #99 he almost stopped wearing this costume following Amazing Spider-Man #300 but wore it on a few occasions since. Notably Spider-Man #13-14, Amazing Spider-Man (vol. 2) #19, the Back and Black event (Amazing Spider-Man #539-543, Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man #17-23, Sensational Spider-Man (vol. 2) #35-40, and Spider-Man Family #1-2), and most recently he worse an Unstable Molecule version of that costume in Amazing Spider-Man #596-599.
Spider-Man became the Spider-Hulk back in Web of Spider-Man #69-70.
Spider-Man specifically states that he became this size during a trip to the Microverse. This is a reference to the events of Amazing Spider-Man Annual #24, Spectacular Spider-Man Annual #10, and Web of Spider-Man Annual #6.
Yes, Spider-Man once also became a Spider-Lizard. That happened in Peter Parker, the Spectacular Spider-Man #40.
Spider-Man’s brief transformation into a massive spider happened during Spectacular Spider-Man (vol. 2) #17-20.
Peter Parker has never been turned into a Spider-Ham, the Spider-Ham is actually a Spider-Man from another reality that was first seen in Marvel Tails Starring Peter Porker the Spectacular Spider-Ham #1.
The Green Goblin was seemingly killed in Amazing Spider-Man #122 when he was impaled on his own goblin glider. Osborn survived as explained in Spider-Man: The Osborn Journals #1. He resurfaced again in Amazing Spider-Man #412.
Aunt May has seemingly died on two different occasions. The first happened in Amazing Spider-Man #196 when Mysterio faked her death in order to learn what happened to the lost fortune of mobsters Dutch Malone. Peter exposed the truth in Amazing Spider-Man #200. The second time was in Amazing Spider-Man #400. However, she turned up alive again in Spider-Man #97. As it turned out, the Green Goblin replaced her with a dying actress who wanted one last great performance. It’s… It’s really complicated.
Peter first met Mary Jane in Amazing Spider-Man #42 and they dated on and off for years until they got married in Amazing Spider-Man Annual #21. Mary Jane was pregnant in Spectacular Spider-Man #220 until she had a miscarriage in Amazing Spider-Man #418. Lastly, Peter and Mary Jane’s marriage was erased from existence by Mephisto in Amazing Spider-Man #545.
My Brother’s Son
Peter Parker has locked himself up in his room, leading Aunt May to ask Ben what he said to upset Peter. Ben admits that he doesn’t know and she suggests that he tell Peter he’s a good boy. Ben points out that he’s been telling the boy that very thing for the past ten years. He thinks about how he never learned how to be a dad and found himself thrust into the situation after his brother Richard and his wife Mary died in a plane crash.[1] Since then he has always tried to tell Peter how proud his father would be whenever the boy achieved something. Every time he would say this, Peter would become more and more distant with him,
Now Peter has locked himself in his room after he accidentally broke a neighbors camera. Ben enters the room and tells Peter that he’ll have to use the money he saved up to buy a rocket kit to pay for the damage. When Peter accepts this with no protest, Ben tells Peter that his father would be proud of him. Peter sighs and Ben asks him what’s wrong with his father being proud of him. That’s when Peter points out that Ben never tells Peter that he is proud of him. Realizing that he never had causes Ben to pause for a moment. Ben hugs his nephew and apologizes for never saying it before and tells Peter that he has always been proud with Peter.
With everything patched up, Ben then has Peter show him what he is looking at under his microscope. With this all sorted out, Ben thinks that if Richard could see him and Peter now he’d be proud of both of them.

That’s an understatment. Richard and Mary Parker were killed in a plane crash while serving their country as government spies. The details are all in Amazing Spider-Man Annual #5.
If I Was Spider-Man…
Drinking coffee in a park, Peter Parker can’t help but listen to two children on the playground talking about what they would do if they were Spider-Man. One of the boys says that he would instantly reveal his identity to the public, saying that he wants to be famous and there’s no point in keeping his identity secret if he can’t tell anyone. He’d even tell his parents, figuring they could become celebrities as well by writing books about raising Spider-Man. That’s when one of the other kids points out that his parents would worry about him risking his life every night as Spider-Man and that they’d be targets for his various foes. His friends also wouldn’t want to hang out with him if Spider-Man’s villains sought revenge.
The boy conceeds and says he’d still want to be Spider-Man even if he had to keep his secret identity. The other kids point out that it still wouldn’t be easy since if he skipped class to stop a bank robbery, for example, he’d get in trouble for ditching classes and getting sent to juvinile hall. The idea of being Spider-Man after school is shot down as well when his friends point out that he wouldn’t have time for all his after school hobbies and he’d also have to always wash his costume in secret after it gets dirty. The kid finally gets the point and admits that winning the lottery would be a lot better than being Spider-Man.
This entire exchange amuses Peter who, after finishing his coffee, goes back to the laundromat where he is washing his clothes.

The Blessing
May Parker pays a visit to the graves where her late husband Ben, his brother Richard, and her sister-in-law Mary are all buried. She has come to tell them how Jay Jameson proposed to her and she accepted, wishing they were all alive to give her their blessing. She remarks how Jay reminds her so much of Ben when he was alive. She then admits that she hasn’t been by to visit recently because she has been busy developing a life of her own that isn’t build on the lives of those she loved. She also talks about Peter, who has become even more distracted than ever since Ben died as if he was carrying the weight on his shoulders.
Still, she admits that no matter how busy she gets she can’t forget about visiting those she loved. Still, with the direction her life is taking she can’t help but feel guilty, like she is betraying them unless she gets some kind of sign that they are all okay with her marrying Jay. As she begins to cry, it suddenly starts to rain. The sudden rain also produces a rainbow which May takes a sign of approval and thanks Ben before leaving the cemetary.

Fight at the Museum
Peter Parker and Norah WInters have been assigned to cover the new super-hero exhibit that is being put on display at the Smithsonian National Design Museum. There Peter is embarassed when he discovers that they have Spider-Man’s old Spider-Buggy on display. Salting the wound is the laughter coming from a group of school children who are being shown the relic of Spider-Man’s past. When Peter tries to dissuade Norah from looking into this further, the guide decides to go into great detail explaining the nature in which the Spider-Buggy came to be. He explains that the vehicle was constructed by Corona Motors as part of an failed advertising scheme thought up by the firm of Carter and Lombardo.[1]
Everyone gets a good laugh, parituclarly Noah who wonders how big Spider-Man’s ego is to put his face on the hubcaps and on the built in spider-signal. Peter tries to defend his alter-ego’s decision to make the Spider-Buggy but he is ignored in favor of more jokes. That’s when one of the parents on the field trip notices her son making jokes about Spider-Mand and scolds him, reminding the boy that Spider-Man once saved his father and he should show a little more respect and drags him away for punishment. Seeing this brings Peter to tears, and he tells Norah that he loves seeing good parenting in action.

True story. The Spider-Mobile was first reared its ugly head in Amazing Spider-Man #130. It was later smashed and the wreckage was returned to Carter and Lombardo in Amazing Spider-Man #160.
Violent Visions
With nobody left in her life, Madam Web have returned to her home in Salem, Oregon to spend the final years of her life in the home where she was born. Suddenly she is bombarded with deeply disturbing visions about Spider-Man and his allies. Someone is going to stlak the wall-crawler, a deadly hunter who is going to target the wall-crawler and everyone close to him. There will be suffering, trails, a gauntlet, something that will unravel the web of destiny.[1]
Suddenly, she is interrupted by Ana Kravinoff breaking into her home. Web tries to defend herself with the mechanical spider-arms on her life support system but Ana easily dodges them and knocks the old woman out. Her mother assures Ana that the old woman will live and that she’ll have visions again. Now that they have their eyes, Sasha says their hunt can begin. When a spider skitters by, Sasha stomps it under her foot.

Madam Web’s visions are fortelling the upcoming Gauntlet and Grim Hunt story arcs which will take place from Amazing Spider-Man #612-637. The only thing that isn’t part of that event is an image of Spider-Man kissing Ms. Marvel. The pair briefly dated in Ms. Marvel (vol. 2) #47. Atthough their romance is quickly quashed. The last reference to their romance is made in Siege: Spider-Man #1.
