Spider-Verse continues from Spider-Verse Team-Up #1…

On Earth-1610, Miles Morales and Jessica Drew have been attacked by Verna’s hounds: Fireheart, Sable, and Kravinoff. Luckily, they are rescued by the arrival of Otto Octavius’ Superior Spider-Arm which includes the Otto Octavius version of Spider-Man from Earth-616, the Assassin Spider-Man of Earth-8351, and the Spider-Punk of Earth-138. The trio quickly kill the hounds and order Miles and Jessica to suit up and follow them or else they are going to die. As they change, Miles confirms that this is the Spider-Man from another dimension that he had recently encountered.[1] Verna is furious that the spiders killed her hounds and charges at them. Before crossing through the porta, Miles tells her that she just made things personal. The portal then closes, causing Verna to crash into and shatter the grave of Rio Morales.[2] Furious at losing these spiders, Verna vows to feast on their bones.

Meanwhile, at “Safe Zone” located on Earth-13’s Central Park, the Peter Parker of Earth-616 has just been dropped a bombshell. The gathered spiders have selected him to be their leader as he is considered a chosen one among them. Spider-UK explains that they have chosen him because he is the only one who has defeated one of the Inheritors, Morlun, on two different occasions.[3] That’s when they get a reading on a second group of spiders that they have been tracking and begin organizing to meet with them and get them to join their growing army. Meanwhile, Silk notes that a lot of these alternate reality Spider-Men are different versions of Peter Parker and wonders if she is as attracted to them as she is the one from her native reality. Walking among the group she finds not attraction to any of them until she walks past the Scarlet Spider and wonders what his story is.[3]

Meanwhile, Old Man Spider suggests three separate teams should go and recruit the other group of spiders. The Old Man selects the Gwen Stacy Spider-Woman from Earth-65 and the Ben Reilly Spider-Man from Earth-94, however the Spider-Man from Earth-616 vetos the inclusion of Gwen. Gwen doesn’t understand why, and Reilly tells her he’ll explain it to her later.[5] Spider-Man-616 is then handed a dimensional transport device and communicator. He then selects Spider-Man 2099, his Spider-Woman, and Silk to accompany him. This time, it’s Old Man Spider who speaks up, saying that Silk can’t come for reasons he will also explain later. The third team is led by Spider-UK, who selects the Spider-Girl of Earth-928 and Spider-Ham to come with him. As usual, Mayday leaves her baby brother, Benjy, in the care of the Captain Universe Spider-Man of Earth-13, who once again promises her that he will keep Benjy safe. When the three teams activate their dimensional transport device, Silk decides to rush the portal after they leave. The other spiders try to stop her, but are too slow.

The Spider-Army appears on Earth-928 in the year 2099 AD where they meet this other group of spiders which includes Spider-Man Noir of Earth-90214, Spider-Monkey of Earth-8101, the Spider-Man and Black Widow of Earth-1610, Spider-Punk, the Assassin Spider-Man, and Spider-Punk. The Spider-Woman of Earth-807128 then calls their leader who is annoyed over being interrupted while being in the middle of an experiment. The Spider-Man of Earth-616 recognizes this Spider-Man and his wrist scanner confirms that it is his past self when Otto Octavius controlled his body. Calling aside his fellow 616 allies, Peter figures that this is what happened to Octavius when was briefly shoved out of time and suggests. Miguel O’Hara recognizes this as his home reality, but Peter tells him to focus. It’s also here that Old Man Spider notices that Silk has tagged along with them against her order.

When Spider-UK extends an invitation to the other spiders to join them in the safe zone, Otto explains that he has built a device that can mask his team’s presence from the Inheritors. However, these newcomers are jeopardizing their advantage, particularly since both the Scarlet Spider and Silk are reading off the chart. Old Man Spider tries to explain that Silk is the “Bride” a special spider-totem. Before he can completely explain what this means, Octavius dismisses it as superstitious nonsense and believes the only way to defeat the Inheritors is with science. That’s when Daemos arrives to slay them all. Otto orders his team to attack all at once. However, despite the onslaught, Daemos manages to destroy the Spider-Cyborg of Earth-2818. The Peter Parker of Earth-616 orders his team to help and that’s when he notices Miles Morales is part of Otto’s team. Seeing this other version of Spider-Man confuses Morales, and Peter explains that Otto is him, but not, explaining that it is a complicated situation. Kaine and Spider-Girl are looking forward to killing Daemos, particularly Mayday who believes that he murdered her entire family.[7] Silk blames herself because this wouldn’t have happened if she stayed put, and Old Man Spider corrects her by saying she should have stayed in the bunker. Silk is shocked to discover he knows about that.[8]

By this time, the Otto Octavius Spider-Man has decided he has had enough and uses his mechanical arms to slays Daemos. This gets a mixed reaction from the other spiders, some are horrified at the apparent callous murder, while others — particularly Spider-Girl — are glad. That’s when the 616 Peter Parker points out that in the past when he has fought Morlun’s kind they crumble to dust when he dies. That’s when Spider-Man 2099 deduces that the Octavius Spider-Man used 2099 tech to put Daemos into stasis, preventing this process. Otto explains how examining Daemos for weaknesses will give them a tactical advantage. The six-armed Spider-Man of Earth-92100 and Lady Spider of Earth-803 offer their expertise. Otto also says they need to get rid of SIlk since her “scent” is drawing the Inheritors to them. Old Man Spider tries to explain to them why SIlk is important when, suddenly, Daemos teleports into the room with his siblings Brix and Bora. He quickly kills Old Man Spider before he can impart his knowledge. They are all shocked to see Daemos standing before them, especially since his dead body is still on the ground. As the three Inheritors attack, Spider-UK orders everyone to pull away. Otto Octavius has a meltdown because he cannot comprehend that his victory was so easily taken away. However, Kaine, the Ben Reilly Spider-Man, and Black Widow all deduce that the Inheritors cheat death by cloning new bodies. Reilly has picked up the coordinates of the dimension Daemos and the others have come from. The trio agrees to work together to prevent their foes from creating more clones and teleport away.[9]

Miles can’t believe that Jessica would leave him like this. That’s when Parker-616 passes Miles a portal device and asks him to help the others escape. He then checks on Old Man Spider who is clinging to life. He has also been unmasked, and Peter is surprised to see that he is Ezekiel Sims. Sims explains that he comes from a world where Morlun killed Spider-Man instead of him. With his dying breath, Ezekiel tells Spider-Man that the most important spiders are the Bride, the Other, and the Scion and he must do whatever it takes to keep them safe. However, Silk — despite being the Bride — doesn’t want to leave the others open and grabs one of the portal devices and flees into the multiverse to try and lead the Inheritors away from the others. In order to keep her safe, Parker and Octavius send Spider-Woman-616 and Spider-Man Noir to keep her safe.[10] Meanwhile, Spider-Man 2099 and some of the others are making off with Daemos’ dead body. Seeing this, Daemos tells Brix and Bora to go after the Bride while he recovers his old body.[11] With their forces divided, Octavius finally agrees to take his team back to the Safe Zone. When they return to Earth-13, the spiders catch everyone else up on what happened. That’s when Otto Octavius cuts through all the chatter and tells them all that he is in charge from now on.

Continuity Notes

  1. Miles comments that this is what Spider-Man looked like the last time he saw him. He encountered the Octavius Spider-Man in Cataclysm #4. However, he also met the Peter Parker of Earth-616 prior to that in Spider-Men #1-5.

  2. Rio Morales was the mother of Miles Morales. She was fatally shot in Ultimate Comics Spider-Man (vol. 2) #22

  3. Spider-Man has battled Morlun to the death on two different occasions. The first time was in Amazing Spider-Man (vol. 2) #30-35 and in the Other: Evolve or Die story arc (Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man #1-4, Marvel Knights: Spider-Man #19-22, Amazing Spider-Man #525-528)

  4. She is drawn to Kaine because she is the fabled “Bride” while he is the Other. See Scarlet Spider (vol. 2) #13-15.

  5. Peter’s reasoning is that the Gwen Stacy of his reality was killed by the Green Goblin, as seen in Amazing Spider-Man #121. Seeing this Gwen has obviously has opened up old wounds.

  6. Otto Octavius took over Peter Parker’s life from Amazing Spider-Man #698 until Superior Spider-Man #31. Otto was shunted forward in time as seen in Superior Spider-Man #17-19. Otto will get back to his proper place in time in Amazing Spider-Man (vol. 3) #15.

  7. Daemos for sure murdered Mayday’s father and left her to believe that he murdered her mother and boyfriend. See Amazing Spider-Man (vol. 3) #8. However, May will discover that Mary Jane and Wes are still alive in issue #15 of this series.

  8. As explained in Amazing Spider-Man (vol. 3) #4-5, Silk was sealed away in a bunker by Ezekiel Sims to protect her from Morlun and his family.

  9. Their deduction is correct. For more on this and the clone’s attempts to stop the Inheritor’s cloning operations see Scarlet Spiders #1-3.

  10. For more on Silk’s journey see Spider-Woman (vol. 5) #1.

  11. And for more on that see Spider-Man 2099 (vol. 2) #6.
