Blaine Dawson, son of Clint Dawson who owns the Double D Ranch, is out with the cattle hands keeping the cattle in line when they are attacked by cattle rustlers lead by a man named Lasher. Despite Blaine's best efforts, Lasher and his men manage to steal the cattle and flee. Blaine then rushes home to his father, leaving the ranch hands to discuss the tension between Clint and his eldest son.

When Blaine arrives home, his father Clint is angry that his son allowed Lasher and his outlaws to make off with his cattle and an argument explodes between the two family members. This ends with Blaine getting fed up of his father riding on him all the time and the young man decides to break off on his own and become an outlaw to show up his father. Along the way to meet up with Lasher and his gang, Blaine runs into Kid Colt and draws on the outlaw hero. However the Kid is a faster draw and easily shoots the guns out of Blaine's hands and manages to convince the kid to talk things out.

Setting up camp, Blaine tells Kid Colt how he intends to join Lasher's gang to show up his father. When Blaine beds down for the night, Kid Colt pulls out a letter he got from Clint -- who the Kid is actually friends with -- that details the troubles that Clint has been having with his son. Kid Colt decides that he will tag along with Blaine to join up with Lasher's gang in order to convince the lad that the life of an outlaw is not as glorifying as young Blaine might think.

The next day the two men pay a visit to Lasher's gang where Kid Colt makes a bid for membership. When some of the outlaws try to outdraw him, Kid Colt shoots them dead. Watching Kid Colt ruthlessly earn his respect among the outlaws, Blaine begins to reconsider his glorification of outlaws. Blaine has his fill after Kid Colt wipes out the entire gang and battles Lasher, prompting the boy to fetch his father to recover their cattle. When they finally get back, they witness Kid Colt gunning down Lasher. Blaine draws his gun on Kid Colt and orders him to leave, to which the Kid complies. However as he rides off, Clint catches up with him and thanks Kid Colt for his help and promises to tell his son the truth of the situation once things have calmed down.

The corpses are found by Kid Colt who happens to be passing through the area, gunning down the men responsible. Of all the bad luck, the Kid is suddenly confronted by Red Cloud, the leader of the Natives who were slaughtered. Red Cloud instantly accuses Kid Colt of slaying his brothers. The Kid tries to explain his innocence and how he already avenged the slaughtered warriors by killing their murderers, but Red Cloud will not listen to reason.

Before a fight can break out a posse of white colonists comes riding up forcing both Kid Colt and Red Cloud to go their separate ways. Later Red Cloud rides to a sacred mound where he calls upon his gods to rain down destruction on the settlers in the area to avenge the murder of his people. However, Kid Colt has followed and just as a raging storm lands, he confronts the angered Native American leader.

Still unable to convince him that the wrong doing was avenged the two men get into a fist fight. The ensuing battle sends both men falling over a cliff and into a raging river. Among the attendees of the hanging is Kid Colt who remarks that Gaffer's dying words really shook up the town. One of the locals mentions that Lennox had a son named Cabe who nobody has ever seen, but is reported as being just as wild as his father.

Later that night after the crowd has disbursed, Cabe Lennox -- the spitting image of his father -- comes to claim his father's body and vows to get revenge against those responsible for his hanging. Cabe first kills sheriff Jeff Maitland and then Judge Tolliver that night. By morning the locals of Pine Bluff were burying six of their citizens killed by Cabe Lennox's shooting spree.

However, the Kid manages to save himself by grabbing a branch on the way down and climbing back up to the top.
