Tough Kid Squad Comics

This was a one-shot series. I think they were trying to duplicate the success of the Young Allies. Why have one Bucky when you can two imitation Buckies that are twin brothers (or something). This series also featured back-up stories with two other failing characters: The Flying Flame and the Human Top. I’ve only included it as part of Kid Komics index is because it is a one off series issue in a time when one-shots were rare, it was published 2 months prior to the first issue of Kid Komics and it has a similar title. Also it’s my index, I make the rules.

Series Overview

Kid Komics was yet another in a series of anthology comics published by Timely Comics. The series was a mix of various genres, primarily superhero and humor stories. The first issue introduced Captain Wonder, and featured a back-up story starring Knuckles O’Toole and Whitewash Jones from the Young Allies. It also introduced western hero Pinto Pete. It also featured war stories featuring Subby the kid with his own boat, an Breezy and the Glider Patrol. The rest of the book was reserved from some bullshit comedy stories some of which are pretty racist as they are unfunny by today’s standard. Issue #2 also was the last appearance of all of these characters with the exception of the Young Allies who became a regular feature until the end of the run.

Issue #3 featured the last golden age appearance of the Vision. Other features including the Daredevil 3 and Red Hawk, two war titles that didn’t last more than an issue. Issue #4 added the Destroyer as a recurring feature as well as regular Let’s Play Detective feature. It also included a Sub-Mariner story, his only appearance in this series. Tommy Tyme became another regular feature in issue #5. By issue #6 all the humor stories were cut, Jap Buster Johnson and Corporal Dix were added to the title. The Whizzer appeared in issue #7. This started a rotation between the Whizzer, Jap Buster Johnson, and the Destroyer until issue #10.

With superhero comics becoming less popular, Kid Komics was relaunched as Kid Movie Komics with issue #11. The title included humor comics about cutsey animals.

Series Legacy

I have covered the legacies of characters who have appeared elsewhere so go read about them on the other parts of the index if you feel so inclined. The only other character of note is Captain Wonder who would later go on to be one of the main characters in The Twelve mini-series.

Index Scope

This index will only include the superhero titles/non-humor stories and text features that appear in these old titles.
