Deadpool vs. Carnage #2

Deadpool vs. Carnage #2

Deadpool had tracked down Carnage in order to kill him and put an end to his cross-country murder spree. Unfortunately, just before he could decapitate his target he had his face blasted off by Shriek, Carnage’s girlfriend. Now Carnage wants to know how Deadpool was able to find him. Deadpool insists that Carnage left clues that were easy for him to follow.

Carnage can’t believe this because his actions are completely random. However, Deadpool tries to explain that they have very similar types of insanity and he is able to track him by following the seemingly random patterns.

Carnage has head enough and attempts to kill Deadpool, unaware that the mercenary has a healing factor that makes that nearly impossible. Deadpool responds by playing very loud dubstep on speakers he attached to his belt because he learned through Venom that symbiotes are vulnerable to loud noise.[1] Shriek once again steps in and blasts the speakers into pieces. However, this is not the only trick up Deadpool’s sleeve and he tosses some incendiary grenades at Carnage. Unfortunately, he forgets that they are triggered by a remote. When Deadpool triggers the bombs he gets caught in the shockwave. When he gets back up he assumes that he has destroyed Carnage and begins patting himself on the back. Unfortunately for Deadpool, Carnage is still alive and after disemboweling the Merc With a Mouth, he and Shriek fly away.

Deadpool then rushes to a nearby storage facility where he has a locker full of spare weapons and costumes. When his keys don’t work he goes to the front desk to ask why. As the clerk looks things up on her computer, Deadpool hears a radio report about another series of Carnage related murders. The clerk then tells him that he missed three payments and the contents of his locker were auctioned off.[2] Getting the address of the buyer, Deadpool discovers that the guy who bought his gear is an obese man named Doverton who is glad to see him. Doverton wasn’t a fan of Deadpool, but has wanted to become Deadpool because with the purchased equipment he was able to start seeing the patterns in Carnage’s murder spree.[3] He even feels like he’s connected to Carnage somehow because he shares the name of the town that Carnage recently terrorized.[4] Deadpool is thoroughly impressed and insists that Doverton go on the road with him and help with his hunt for Carnage.

Meanwhile, Cletus and Shriek are on the road in a stolen convertible to move around undetected until their next murder spree. Cletus still doesn’t believe that Deadpool can track his movements. Suddenly, Deadpool contacts them on a CB radio that is in the back seat of the car. Deadpool, as it turns out, is in a thresher that is being hauled in the back of the truck in front of Cletus and Shriek. He starts it up and drives off the back of the truck. The resulting head-on on collision causes Shriek to smash her head through the convertable’s windshield. Furious that his girlfriend was hurt, Cletus changes into Carnage and leaps at Deadpool. He smashes through the thresher’s windshield and tosses Deadpool onto the road. Cleatus then says it is time for round two.

Recurring Characters

Deadpool, Carnage, Shriek

Continuity Notes

  1. Deadpool states her that he works with Venom. This is a lie. I’m actually a little surprised to note that Deadpool had yet to encounter Venom at this point. He also refers to Venom as Carnage’s “brother or daddy or whatever.” Venom actually birthed the original Carnage symbiote back in Amazing Spider-Man #345. This is not the original symbiote however, it was consumed by Venom in Peter Parker: Spider-Man #10. Kasady later found an identical symbiote in Webspinners: Tales of Spider-Man #14. However, Venom is still generally considered the “father” of Carnage.

  2. Deadpool’s excuse for not paying his storage locker fees was that he was traveling across the multiverse killing evil versions of himself. See Deadpool Kills Deadpool #1-4.

  3. Deadpool states here that he recently met his biggest admirer and it didn’t go too well for him. This is another reference to Deadpool Kills Deadpool which revealed that Deadpool’s biggest fan was one of the Watchers. This Watcher sacrificed his life to save Deadpool’s own.

  4. Carnage terrorized the town of Doverton, Colorado in Carnage USA #1-5.

Topical References

  • Deadpool says his song recordings are in MP3 format. This should be considered a topical reference as MP3’s are no longer the ubiquitous file format they were when this comic was released.
