In Chinatown, the fortune-teller known as Suan Ming tells her girls to head home before it goes dark.[1] As if on cue, the power goes out, prompting Suan Ming to gloat about how she’s still got it.

Elsewhere, at Mister Negative’s hideout, the mobster has used his corrupting touch on Dagger in order to fulfill Suan Ming’s prophecy that she will kill him. Helpless to stop their foe, Cloak demands to know what Mister Negative has done to her. However, Negative is certain Cloak already knows. The mobster is correct, as Tyrone can sense Tandy being swarmed by the Darkforce and pleads with Negative to stop this as she cannot control it as he can. Fearing that she is going to die, Cloak begs him to stop it before Tandy dies.

When Ty offers to do anything to stop this, Mister Negative decides to oblige. He then touches Tyrone with his corrupting touch. Just like with Tandy, this causes Tyrone’s powers to invert. Now, instead of being a creature of darkness, he is now a creature of light. Tandy tells Ty that she is feeling hungry, something he knows all to well. He tells her to trust him and when he kisses her there is a powerful flash of pure light that decimates the area around them. This sedates Dagger’s hunger. In the aftermath of the battle, Tyrone puts his cloak back on and it suddenly turns pure white. They look around for Mister Negative, but he is nowhere to be found and they assume that he got what he wanted out of this: his own death.

Dagger can’t believe that their powers have inverted and that they kissed. However, Cloak insists that it was the only way to save her life. She doesn’t know how she is going to handle the Darkforce as Tyrone did, but he assures her that they’ll find a way.[2] Dagger hugs her partner and both think about how they were destined to be together and while they loved each other very much life kept on getting in their way. Still, despite the fact they both wanted to run they remained together, until now when everything has changed.

Epilogue

Mister Negative actually survived the sudden light blast. Later, when he meets with his new assistant, Melanie Santivale, she asks why he didn’t just destroy Cloak and Dagger. Mister Negative is certain that he will die at Dagger’s hands, just as Suan Ming predicted, and he has done the thing someone who is in his position, made a deal with the devil.

This devil is none other than D’Spayer. This embodiment of dispairs looks to the future. He sees Cloak and Dagger continue their war against crime. He also sees the challenges they will face in the future: Fate’s Book, the Order of the Eastern Star, the Dreams of Nightmare, the Shining Temple, Mayhem, and ultimately, the Nothing Beyond Nothing.[3]

Continuity Notes

  1. Suan Ming is watching news footage of Spider-Man, Firestar, and Gravity defending spider-signal jammers from mutated spiders. This is taken from Amazing Spider-Man #671.

  2. It’s strange here that Tandy doesn’t know what it’s like wielding the Darkforce since Dagger previously had her powers inverted in Strange Tales (vol. 2) #17-18/Mutant Misadventures of Cloak and Dagger #1. One possible explanation is that the previous time Dagger wasn’t subject to the same kind of hunger that Cloak suffered.

  3. Despite the fact that it appears that Nick Spencer had plotted a course for future Cloak and Dagger stories, none of these glimpses of the future have come to pass at the time of this writing (January 2021) Moreover, Spencer later went on and undid the power swap in Amazing Spider-Man (vol. 5) #6-8, suggesting that these events may have been abandoned.
