Tales to Astonish #89

The Prince and the Power!

With full control over the alien Servo-Robot, Attuma orders it to attack Atlantis and destroy the Sub-Mariner. The robot manages to smash through the gates of the under water city and easily fights off the Atlantean army, prompting the Sub-Mariner to swim into action. Try as he might, Namor cannot seem to damage the gigantic robot.

With a frontal assault a failure, Namor calls upon the creatures of the sea to come to his aid. First sending a pod of sharks after the robot, then ordering a giant whale to try and swallow the robot, and not even an army of octopi are able to stop the massive robot.

When all seems lost the robot is suddenly captured in a transparent dome and pulled to the surface. Namor and Dorma swim up to see what has captured the robot and see that it's alien masters -- having noticed it's absence from their ship -- have come to collect it and leave the Earth without further incident.

Namor then returns to his kingdom where he witnesses Attuma fleeing following this defeat.

Continuity Notes

  • The narrative of this story mentions the Strangers previous appearances on Earth in X-Men #11 and 18.

  • Reference is made to Mao Tse Tung the former Chairman of China as though he is still the leader of the country. This should be considered a topical reference per the Sliding Timescale of Earth-616, particularly since Mao died in 1976.
