In Search of Ego

From Asgard, Odin watches as his son and Hercules accompany Galactus to confront Ego the Living Planet. He cannot understand why his son would ally himself with an enemy against one he fought for, but decides to continue observing so he might learn the answer.[1] Listening in to the conversation aboard Galactus’ ship, Odin hears the world devourer explain to Thor and the others that Ego has gone mad. When Odin sees the insane look on the living planet’s face he is convinced that Galactus tells the truth. Still, he decides only to observe hoping his son can resolve this crisis on his own.

At that moment, Ego blasts the ship carrying Galactus, Thor, Hercules, and Firelord, causing it to crash on Ego’s surface. There, Ego sends massive green creatures to attack them. When Thor and the others fight them off, the thunder god suggest that they venture into Ego and confront his brain. There, he hopes to make the creature see reason and if not, he may be forced to destroy the living planet.

Back on Asgard, Sif watches the proceedings alongside Odin and expresses her concern for Thor’s safety. She pleads with Odin to act, but he refuses to do so. Seeing that she has outspoken, Sif apologizes. Odin forgives her and then heads out to patrol the borders of the kingdom to be alone with his thoughts. Sif still worries over Thor and when Hildegard tries to encourage her that the thunder god will survive, Sif decides to be alone as well. Hildegard then takes the opportunity to use Odin’s crystal ball to observe her sister, Krista, who is still recovering on Earth following a life saving surgery.[2]

Back on the surface of Ego, the living planet has created a massive avatar for himself to try and stop Thor, Hercules and Firelord. When Thor uses his power over the storms against the Ego-avatar, it melts into the ground, revealing the opening to an underground cavern. The trio then follow this tunnel deep into the center of Ego. They are surprised when things grow colder the deeper they go. Soon they reach the center of the planet where they are overwhelmed by the thoughts of Ego’s massive glowing brain. The brain summons more green monsters to fight the intruders but Thor quickly fights them off. When he then throws Mjolnir at the mass of brain matter it causes a massive explosion that envelops the thunder god.
